Virtual consultations:
I specialise in the assessment, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of a range of abdominal conditions but especially gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and colorectal disorders. I have extensive experience in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. I am also a fully accredited bowel cancer screening specialist.
Where a surgical intervention is required, I favour minimally invasive (keyhole or laparoscopic) approaches wherever possible and have tailored my training to mirror this interest having spent a two year fellowship at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit at Guildford. This provided valuable exposure to the latest laparoscopic treatments performed by experts from all over the world. I consider the field of hernia surgery to be an area of special interest and during this period I was able to research the field of laparoscopic hernia repair and acquire extensive operative experience in this respect.
I co-wrote the submission to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence on behalf of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland which, when taken into consideration with evidence from other organisations, led to a change in the guidance on the use of laparoscopic surgery for inguinal hernia repair.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr William Garrett at Spire include:
General surgery
Colorectal surgery
British Medical Association
Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England
Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland
Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland
European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons
A two year fellowship at the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit in Guildford with research performed into the clinical improvement of laparoscopic compared with open inguinal hernia repair.
Consultant General, Colorectal and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Medway Maritime Hospital.
I am married to Tara and we have four small children who occupy almost all of my spare time, but who would have it any other way? I do, when time allows, enjoy sailing, skiing, gardening and DIY. I have previously sailed competitively in numerous offshore races including the Fastnet Race which I have completed three times and completed a trans-Atlantic crossing aboard a small yacht in 1990.
