I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. Appointed as a consultant in 2001 I was clinical director for gastroenterology 2004-2018 and am now Director of the Cambridge University Hospital Biomedical Research Centre. I have a particular interest and expertise in diagnostic gastroenterology, including endoscopy and colonoscopy, and management of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Using the first class facilities at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, I undertake all private diagnostic endoscopy / colonoscopy myself and work closely with colleagues in radiology, pathology, surgery and dietetics to ensure your appropriate investigation and treatment. With a caring and friendly manner in the clinic and outside, I have extensive experience of the full range of medical and dietary therapies for gastroenterological disease.

My clinical and research focus is on inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome - researching the genetic and environmental causes of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and IBS and understanding how better to treat these conditions. I was appointed Professor of Translational Gastroenterology by the University of Cambridge in 2020.
