I am the lead consultant for medical retina conditions at University Hospital Southampton.
I trained in medicine at Queen's University Belfast and graduated with distinction in 1989. I was also awarded an MD for research into the genetics of an inherited form of macular degeneration. I have published circa 400 research papers.
Subsequently, I worked at the University of Iowa, USA for four years prior to being appointed Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Southampton in 2002.
I have won numerous awards for my clinical practice and research including the Nettleship Medal of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for the best research paper by a British Ophthalmologist published in the last three years; I have also been awarded the University Hospital Southampton Innovation and Researcher of the Year awards, two NIHR senior investigator awards and I was awarded the Henkind Lecture by the US Macula Society for outstanding retinal research in 2024. Worldwide I am ranked in the top 0.08% of experts publishing in macular disease and top 0.03 % for retinal diseases.
