I am Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at the University of Leeds and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and have been a Consultant Cardiologist for 15 years.
I specialise in general cardiology, heart failure, hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, heart valve disease, non-invasive investigations.
I have 15 years experience of seeing patients with and at risk of cardiovascular diseases.
I am a trialist and health services researcher. My research incorporates the use of observational and randomised data to deliver population-based studies of cardiovascular care and outcomes. I lead a research active group at the Leeds Institute for Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine, University of Leeds. I hold major research awards predominantly from the NIHR and British Heart Foundation as well as Horizon 2020 (total circa £32M). I have published over 350 research manuscripts in peer reviewed journals including JAMA, Lancet, BMJ, EHJ amounting to nearly 100,000 citations, and I have a large following on social media.
In 2023 I was commissioned by the UK Public Inquiry into Covid-19 to serve as the Independent Expert for Cardiovascular Disease for the Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on Healthcare Systems in the 4 Nations of the UK (Module 3). I Co-Chair The Lancet Regional Health – Europe Commission on Inequalities and Disparities in Cardiovascular Health.
