I qualified in medicine from Queens University Belfast in 1983, obtaining FRCS in 1987 and following this moved to Newcastle upon Tyne to commence training in urological surgery. During this time I performed a laboratory project on bladder cancer leading to an MD.
Prior to being appointed Consultant, I made short visits to several major urological centres in the USA including Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. I was appointed Senior Lecturer in urological surgery in 1994 in Newcastle and appointed to the Foundation Chair of Urology at the University of Leicester in 2001.
I take a special interest in the diagnosis of patients with suspected urological cancers. I regularly perform laparoscopic nephrectomy, radical cystectomy and bladder reconstruction. I also manages patients with advanced prostate cancer and perform trans-rectal ultrasound scan of the prostate and prostate biopsy in men with suspected prostate cancer.
