I am a consultant in sport and exercise medicine treating men, women, children and the elderly. I specialise in the diagnosis and management of injuries and musculoskeletal pain, often as part of a multidisciplinary team which includes radiology, physiotherapy and medical/surgical colleagues.
By providing a clear diagnosis and using that to set a sensible management plan, the aim is to allow people to return to their everyday work and life routine, physical activity, sport or competition. Supporting those to stay physically active for overall health and wellness is an important aspect and philosophy of sport and exercise medicine. I also take referrals for patients who want to return to activity and sport after their operations, and/or who are struggling to become physically active.
I graduated from Cambridge University Medical School in 1984 and trained in family medicine. I obtained a diploma in sports medicine from the University of London in 1991 and completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of California, Davis (UCD) in 1993. The next two years were spent as a faculty member in family medicine at UCD and as a team physician at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1995, I have been in Nottingham as a consultant/senior lecturer in sport and exercise medicine at the Nottingham University Hospitals: appointed special professor in 2004. I served for 2½ years as clinical director for trauma and orthopaedics. I have been in private practice in Nottingham since 1996.
I was part of the design team for sports medicine and physiotherapy when Spire Nottingham Hospital was under construction. The Spire Nottingham Hospital now provides a multidisciplinary space for sports medicine like no other, with the Perform brand an exceptional facility within the new hospital.
I have been involved with sports for many years serving as a consultant for The England and Wales Cricket Board, The Rugby Football League, British Gymnastics and The English Institute of Sport. For 20 years I have been a sports physician for The Wimbledon Tennis Championships and since The ATP World Tour Finals came to The O2 Arena in London I have been a physician for the players. Throughout, I have provided care for the ATP (more than 20 years) and the WTA.
I am a Past-President of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine and past Chairman of the Specialist Advisory Committee in SEM (training). I chaired the work group which produced the successful case for government to enable SEM becoming a specialty of medicine (2005).
I am Director of the Arthritis Research UK Centre for Sport, Exercise and Osteoarthritis (2013-ongoing): a consortium led by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust in collaboration with Oxford, Southampton, Bath, Loughborough, Nottingham and Leeds Universities; investigating the relationship between acute and overuse injury and subsequent osteoarthritis. The centre works with sports representatives, patients, the public and carers, in order to improve the understanding of the effects of sport and exercise on joint health and osteoarthritis. The centre’s research will lead to plans for prevention, assessment and treatment of injury, aimed at reducing the risk of later osteoarthritis.
