Virtual consultations:
I qualified in 1974 from the College of Medicine, University of Baghdad, Iraq. After a period of residency training at a number of teaching hospitals in Baghdad, I chose to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology.
My professional career journey in the UK began in 1981 progressing in training posts from West and East Sussex, then London and Newcastle Upon Tyne interrupted by a research spell (1987-1991) at the Royal Free Hospital, London and culminating in a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist post at Gateshead in 1994. The challenge of academia attracted me to Cardiff and in 1998, I then moved to the University of Wales College of Medicine and University Hospital of Wales, where I have established local, national and international clinical and research collaborations.
My clinical practice has since focused on developing new and innovative approaches to service delivery for benign gynaecology. I set up the first ultrasound based one-stop menstrual disorders clinic in Wales and introduced new treatments such as balloon endometrial ablation for menorrhagia and non-surgical interventions for fibroids. My other areas of clinical expertise include minimal access hysteroscopic and laparoscopic surgery, fertility investigations and treatments.
Ultrasound has been my passion ever since I was a junior trainee and since 2002, I have pioneered the ovarian cancer screening trial in Cardiff and have undertaken many of the advanced scans, as well as providing advice and counselling for the trial’s volunteers.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Professor Nazar Amso at Spire include:

My interests outside of medicine are varied. I enjoy current affairs programmes and follow interesting developments around the world. I find travel – whether for business or pleasure – very educating and often take the opportunity to explore exciting and faraway places with my wife, son and daughter.
I do voluntary work and raise money for charity. I am a Trustee of two charities: “Women’s Care Foundation” and “The British Society for Gynaecological Imaging.”
In the remainder of my little spare time I enjoy a laugh at the annual or biannual golf round.
