Mb BcH, BAO, LRCP & SI (NUI), MD, FRCP
I am an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist of 14 years and a Honorary Professor at the University of Sheffield, with a private practice at Spire Claremont Hospital.
I qualified from medical school in Dublin, Ireland and completed my specialist training in Sheffield which included a period of research. I was awarded an MD with the University of Sheffield.
I am currently the lead for the national double balloon enteroscopy service and I co-lead the capsule endoscopy service; both of which are established regional services which have won national awards. I am also the first author of the British Society of Gastroenterology (national) guidelines and a co-author on the European guidelines (ESGE) on capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy.
I see a variety of gastroenterology disorders including IBS, IBD, reflux, coeliac disease, anaemia and patients needing gastroscopy, colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy. I also sees complex referrals from around the country for second opinions.
I have a special interest in disease of the small bowel . The capsule endoscopy service that I co-lead is the largest in Europe encompassing stomach, small bowel and colon capsule endoscopy.
I have performed several thousands gastroscopies, colonoscopies and flexible sigmoidoscopies. I deliver a high standard of endoscopy with good patient experience and a low complication rate.
I am a keen clinical researcher and is passionate about education and training. I run an annual international capsule endoscopy course in Sheffield for doctors and nurses and am a permanent faculty member at the Lumley course. I have clinical research fellows under my supervision and have been an invited speaker at several national and international gastroenterology meetings as a small bowel expert.
I have been the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) Education Committee Chair 2021-2023 and prior to that I was the BSG Education Web Editor where I curated an entirely new bespoke platform for Elearning for doctors and nurses. I have been closely involved in the capsule endoscopy accreditation pathway and have recently led the UK wide device assisted enteroscopy pathway for JAG promoting quality in endoscopy. I have been a co-author on the national BSG anaemia guidelines and the national BSG guidelines on Sedation for GI endoscopy promoting safety and a good patient experience.
I am one of the most published on small bowel research in the UK and was awarded the Hopkins Endoscopy Prize by the British Society of Gastroenterology in 2012, being the first ever female gastroenterologist to be recognized with this prize. I am a national female mentor. I have done webinars for the World Endoscopy Organisation (WEO)and the World Gastroenterology Organisation. I also help to deliver the capsule endoscopy sessions at the United European Gastroenterology (UEG) summer school.
I see private patients on Tuesday evenings at Claremont. I see patients with most gastroenterology problems including patients with heartburn/reflux, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating or constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, anaemic and any patients requiring gastroscopy or colonoscopy. I also see patients with IBS, coeliac disease, gluten (and other dietary) sensitivity and bacterial overgrowth.
