£5.5m upgrade project commences at Spire Healthcare Abergele Clinic
20 July 2023
- Spire Healthcare’s investment in Wales delivers greater treatment choice and faster access to healthcare for NHS and private patients
- Ten new jobs created in Abergele
- Good outcome from an inspection by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales
Building work has commenced to upgrade the existing Spire Abergele Consulting Rooms in North Wales Business Park, into a new Spire Healthcare Abergele Clinic offering diagnostic services, as well as treatments for orthopaedic, ophthalmic, dermatological, and gynaecological conditions. This £5.5m investment will create 10 new jobs and provide people across North West Wales faster access to one of Spire’s GPs and to a diagnosis, and to surgery that does not require an overnight stay.
Due to open its doors in late 2023 and deliver up to 4,000 operations every year, Spire Abergele Clinic is part of a network of 10 new Spire clinics being developed across Britain. By investing in new clinic facilities like this at Abergele, Spire Healthcare is broadening its community healthcare services to complement its 39 hospital sites across Wales, Scotland and England.
This investment into North Wales is in addition to the £11.4m Chesney Court Outpatient & Diagnostic Centre at Spire Yale Hospital in Wrexham, which opened in February this year.
During 2022, Spire’s Cardiff and Yale Hospitals, and its Abergele Consulting Rooms, saw a total of 127,133 outpatient visits. This new clinic will provide even more people with fast access to healthcare, closer to their homes.
Sue Jones, Hospital Director at Spire Yale Hospital said: “We know that people want fast access to high quality care outside of the hospital setting, at times suited to their busy lives. This is why we are opening new clinics which offer a range of services including ophthalmology, dermatology, gynaecology, orthopaedics, general practice, and dental, alongside complementary services such as sports medicine and physiotherapy. Providing less-complicated medical care in the community leaves our hospital colleagues at Spire Yale Hospital with the capacity to continue delivering more complex surgeries.”
Simon Oates, Spire Healthcare’s Clinic Development Director said: “Commencing work on the first of a network of 10 new Spire clinics, means that more people are closer to accessing healthcare and the treatments they need quickly, so they can get back to doing what they love. Spire Healthcare Abergele Clinic shows our determination to deliver outstanding personalised care in the community.”
In July 2023, the Spire Abergele Consulting Rooms received a good outcome from an inspection by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), which found many examples of excellent practice at the hospital. HIW completed the announced inspection in April 2023, reviewing the hospital for quality of patient experience; safe and effective care; and the quality of management and leadership.
