CQC rates Spire Dunedin Hospital as 'Good'
19 May 2022
Spire Dunedin Hospital in Reading has maintained its ‘Good’ rating, following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
The CQC carried out an unannounced inspection of services offered at the hospital in February. In its report published today, they rated it ‘Good’ overall. They also rated it ‘Good’ in each of the individual categories; safe, effective, caring, responsive to people’s needs and well-led, and for all of the services it provides for adults and younger people.
In today’s report, inspectors made particular mention of the care provided by hospital colleagues. They described staff as treating patients “with compassion and kindness,” respecting “their privacy and dignity,” and providing emotional support for patients, their families and their carers.
The CQC noted that the hospital controlled infection risk well, so crucial during the pandemic. They commented that the hospital planned care to meet the needs of local people, and also that patients did not have to wait too long for treatment, with key services available seven days a week.
Inspectors also noted that staff took care to provide advice on healthy lifestyles to those people coming in for treatment.
The hospital has recently completed a £3.3m refurbishment programme. The works have included the conversion of a former physiotherapy suite into a brand new outpatients department, with four new consulting rooms, a new treatment room and a new reception and waiting area.
The hospital has also converted the old outpatients department into a new MRI suite, which includes the latest, state-of-the art MRI scanner. This will speed up diagnoses for patients, helping to alleviate pressure on waiting lists and reduce waiting times for a scan.
The hospital’s two operating theatres have also been fully refurbished.
Tania Terblanche, Hospital Director at Spire Dunedin Hospital, said: “Today’s rating from the CQC is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all of our colleagues here at Spire Dunedin. In spite of the challenges posed by the pandemic over the past two years, they’ve retained their absolute focus on delivering compassionate, safe and high-quality care to our patients, every day.
“I’m also really pleased that we have now finished our major upgrade at the hospital. Investing in state-of-the-art facilities like our new MRI scanner, and modernising our buildings, enables us offer fast access to diagnosis and treatment, in a comfortable environment, to the people of Reading and the local area.”
95% of Spire Healthcare’s hospitals are rated ‘Good,’ ‘Outstanding’ or the equivalent by health inspectors in England, Wales and Scotland.
