After completing my gastroenterology training on the King's College Hospital gastroenterology rotation and at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital as a Clinical Lecturer, I was appointed to the post of Consultant Gastroenterologist in 1999. My time in research highlighted my preference for meeting and treating patients and using my skills as an endoscopist to help me care for my patients.

I have 23 years of experience working as a Consultant Gastroenterologist. Over this time, I have enjoyed developing services, including introducing new endoscopic techniques, writing protocols and screening referrals for a new nurse-led iron deficiency anaemia clinic, running a new Hepatitis B and C treatment clinic, supporting inflammatory bowel disease services and setting up and supporting the regional Cheshire Bowel Cancer Screening Programme.

I provide an expert medical gastroenterological opinion for the Health Ombudsman to help us understand and learn from episodes of patient care referred to the Ombudsman.

As a busy DGH based Gastroenterologist and general physician, I have extensive experience caring for patients in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. I have recently completed a year as one of four regional trainers in colonoscopy, visiting trainees in their hospitals whose training and progress have been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. This continues my strong interest in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, enteroscopy and colonoscopy).

My practice includes caring for patients with symptoms including an altered bowel habit or bleeding, abdominal pain, indigestion and bloating. I manage patients with conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease and food intolerance, abnormal liver enzymes, anaemia, rectal bleeding and banding of haemorrhoids, reflux and dyspepsia, including Barrett’s oesophagus.

I have performed over 6,000 colonscopies including complex polypectomies, stent insertions and balloon dilatations of strictures. I have also performed over 7,000 gastroscopies including banding of varices, treatment of bleeding ulcers and strictures in both the NHS and private settings. I have been a regular faculty member on courses teaching advanced therapeutic gastroscopy techniques and basic skills in colonoscopy at the Mersey School of Endoscopy.

I actively contribute to clinical research, most recently looking to improve the treatment of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. I am currently interested in optimising care using newer biologic drugs and their monitoring. View the research article.
