Professor Anan Shetty

I am a consultant orthopaedic and knee surgeon at Spire Alexandra Hospital. I specialise in arthroscopic knee surgery, sports injury and knee arthroplasty. I have a special interest in cartilage repair and cartilage transplant surgery, ligament reconstruction (cruciate ligaments) and patellofemoral (knee cap) disorders. I also perform both partial (UKR) and total knee replacements (TKR). I use computer navigation and minimally invasive techniques for knee replacements. I have undertaken some of the most complex revision knee surgery and limb reconstruction surgery.

Apart from my surgical innovations, I am the first surgeon to use the robotics in arthroscopic knee surgery in the world and gel based cartilage repair surgery in the UK. Recently, I have been developing some of the revolutionary surgical techniques for cartilage repair, Gel ACI (Autologous chondrocyte Implantation) with Professor Kim, Director of cell therapy, Catholic University Hospital Seoul, South Korea.

I am the founder and director of the Kent Knee Unit based at the Spire Alexandra Hospital, which was established in response to the requirements and management of knee disorders. I established this with my specialist colleagues following my experience in the USA. It offers the highest quality team approach to the knee problem with rapid access to sophisticated diagnosis and treatment, treating some of the top athletes in the UK. I have been highly respected and admired both by my students and colleagues.

I am a former senior lecturer at King's College in London, where I taught and examined both undergraduate and postgraduate students. I am also involved with training the orthopaedic surgeons at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London. I am leading some of the world class research in knee surgery. My reputation as a knee surgeon and orthopaedic teacher attracts surgeons and patients from all over the world.

I underwent my postgraduate surgical training in the UK and completed my masters degree from the University of Liverpool. I completed my Orthopaedic Registrar training at Kings, Guy's and St Thomas' Orthopaedic Rotation and gained my FRCS Orthopaedic surgery by the Intercollegiate Board. I was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training by the Joint Committee on Higher Surgical Training (JCHST). I was a Consultant knee surgeon at Medway Maritime Hospital and King's College Hospital in the past.

I have been recognised as one of the most innovative surgeons by my colleagues and a gifted surgeon by my teachers.
