Dr David Cottrell

Consultant Neurologist

MBChB, BSc (Hons), MRCP, PhD

I qualified with an MB ChB and BSc (Hons) first class from Edinburgh University. I later received a PhD in mitochondrial cytopathies, ageing and Alzheimer's disease from Newcastle University. I have published work, which was carried out at the Universities of Yale and Western Ontario and published widely in the fields of multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, ageing and mitochondrial disorders.

I moved with my family to Bristol in 2005 to take up a Consultant and Senior Lecturer post with a lead role in the delivery of care for patients with multiple sclerosis.

My private interest is in general neurology and in particular headaches. I attend the American Academy Neurology meeting on an annual basis to keep updated. I also provide a medical legal service in neurology.

At Southmead Hospital I run both general neurology and multiple sclerosis clinics. I have established the new rapid access MS relapse clinic for patients with MS and secured funding for an additional MS nurse and secretary and have received both ethical approval and financial backing to commence a neurophysiological study in primary progressive MS.

I have regular teaching commitments to both the third and fifth year medical students.

I have also been instrumental in starting an MS charity, BrAMS (Bristol and Avon Multiple Sclerosis) to provide a specialist MS centre at Southmead to improve patient care and increase clinical trial activity in MS at Southmead. I continue to be active in clinical research and am part of the stem cell research team based at Southmead.
