Specialises in
Virtual consultations:
I am dedicated to providing an outstanding service for surgery in weight loss, diabetes and gallstones. To date I have been involved in over 2,500 operations over a 16 year period. This includes over 500 operations for gallstones and over 250 weight loss surgeries.
As a consultant upper gastro-intestinal and bariatric surgeon I provide a specialist service including teaching weight loss surgery and research in diabetic surgery. I was the first Hunterian Professor in weight loss and diabetic surgery awarded in 2012 by the Royal College of Surgeons. I believe in the importance of being the patient's advocate and in the privileges of treating a patient.
Gallstones – laparoscopic cholecystectomy: Part of my standard practice performed as day case or within an enhanced recovery short stay programme in order to maximise patient experience whilst maintaining the quality of the service.
Weight loss surgery – Laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding: Having trained and worked in two International Centres of Excellence for Obesity Surgery I regard myself as a member of a team delivering high quality care. Including surgery for type 2 diabetes I provide the full range of endoscopic and surgical treatments for obesity from gastric balloons to revisional surgery including changing gastric bands to a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy.
I have been the lead for endoscopy at North Bristol NHS Trust and my experience allows me to offer the full range of anti-reflux and dysmotility surgery including para-oesophageal and hiatus hernia repair. I established the state of the art oesophageal physiology unit at North Bristol NHS Trust allowing me to help improve the treatment of reflux disease. As well routine OGD endoscopy I offer high resolution oesophageal manometry and impedence pH studies to improve the management of reflux disease. I perform the full range of complex interventional endoscopy including Bravo for wireless pH monitoring.
From being an Anatomy Demonstrator to an Honorary Lectureship at Bristol University my area of interest has been teaching and self-assessment in surgery. I helped develop an annual national training day for bariatric and diabetic surgery and more recently have become the Unit Co-ordinator for senior surgery for the medical students at North Bristol NHS Trust. As a doctor I have been heavily involved with projects to improve services within hospitals as well as working at a national level in the management of our specialist societies. I believe in the importance of analysing existing practices to improve services and recognise the challenge of change management.
