Mr James Hewes

I am a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon at Spire Bristol. I believe that obesity is a stigmatising and damaging disease and not a lifestyle choice and I am passionate about the transformative changes in health and wellbeing that weight loss interventions provide.

Working with Verve Health Group at Spire, I provide all types of laparoscopic (keyhole) weight loss procedures including gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding. I perform revision procedures such as band adjustment or replacement or conversion to different bariatric operations.

I have performed over 700 major weight loss procedures and have developed an outstanding national-leading enhanced recovery programme. I am dedicated to improving outcomes in surgery and have an excellent safety profile as published nationally via the Surgeon Specific Outcome dataset available via the National Bariatric Surgery Registry.

The team at Spire Bristol provides state-of-the-art perioperative care in the largest private hospital in the South West.

My NHS practice is at Southmead Hospital, Bristol which is the regional tertiary referral bariatric centre at which I was the lead clinician for over 10 years.

I am particularly interested in education and debunking many of the myths and prejudice surrounding obesity. I give regular teaching to GPs and other healthcare professionals and train local and visiting surgeons.
