MB BS, MRCS (Eng), MS (Surgery), FRCS (Orth)
I am an experienced and skilled specialist knee surgeon with a demonstrated international reputation. I have a particular interest in arthroscopic “keyhole” surgery, ligament reconstruction, cartilage and meniscus repair, partial knee replacement and the treatment of early arthritis.
I am very much involved in surgeon education and am often invited to teach, lecture and demonstrate surgical techniques around the world. I have been an invited international speaker at many meetings including: the Norwegian Arthroscopy Society, Australian Knee Society, Danish Society of Arthroscopy and Sports Traumatology and Turkish Arthroscopy Society. My regular attendance as faculty for international congresses gives me an invaluable exposure to the latest evidence and state-of-the-art treatments.
I have published many research articles and book chapters on knee surgery and have received awards, both nationally and internationally, for research including the BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) President’s medal.
I trained at the Imperial College, London. My thesis was on medial ligament injuries of the knee and I was awarded a Master of Surgery degree. I spent a year’s fellowship in Bordeaux at the ‘Clinique du Sport’ and a further six month’s fellowship in the UK specialising in partial knee replacement. I recently undertook an 18-month sabbatical working full time at the International Knee and Joint Centre in Abu Dhabi where I started a meniscus transplant service and worked with many of the professional sports clubs in the Emirates. My NHS practice is at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre and provides a tertiary referral service for patients from around the South West with complex ligament, cartilage and meniscus problems.
My other roles include: Member of the Arthroscopy committee for ESSKA (European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy), chairman of the ESSKA Collateral ligaments Working Group, member of the International Meniscus Reconstruction Experts Forum (focusing on meniscus transplant) and member of the prestigious international ACL Study Group (of which there have been only 10 surgeons elected from the UK). I am a reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, and on the steering committee for the UK National Ligament registry – improving best practices by constant analysis of knee ligament reconstruction outcomes.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr James Robinson at Spire include:
Orthopaedics
Orthopaedics - hip and knee
