Mr Kim Hutton

Consultant Paediatric Surgeon and Urologist

MBChB, ChM, FRCS (Paed)

I am a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon with a special interest in Paediatric Urology.

I qualified from Leeds University in 1983 with a distinction in anatomy. After training in general surgery in Leeds and in London at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, I became a tutor in paediatric surgery at the Leeds General Infirmary. I completed a higher degree for work investigating urothelial cell biology, whilst at the Cancer Research Institute at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, and was awarded first prize for my presentation at the Urological Research Society in January 1993, London. I completed my paediatric surgical training in Leeds and Manchester and undertook a Pediatric Urology Fellowship at the Clark-Morrison Children's Urological Center, Los Angeles, USA in 1996.

I was appointed as a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff in 1997 and retired from NHS practice in June 2019. Whilst at UHW I developed services for paediatric urology including urodynamics, neuropathic bladder and renal tract stone disease. There were no paediatric continence nurse specialists in Cardiff when I arrived and I was instrumental in progressing key appointments and developing a team approach to the care of paediatric patients with complex urological needs. I ensured there were close working relationships with colleagues in paediatric nephrology, paediatric radiology, paediatric gastroenterology and paediatric anaesthesia, and this collaboration within multidisciplinary teams I believe was rewarded by improved patient outcomes. I was Lead Clinician for Paediatric Surgery at UHW from 2006 to 2016.

I specialise in paediatric surgery and paediatric urology. I have a keen interest in general paediatric surgery of childhood including foreskin problems, circumcision, preputioplasty, inguinal hernia, inguinal herniotomy, testicular problems, hydrocele, undescended testis, varicocele, testicular pain, umbilical hernia, epigastric hernia, constipation, abdominal pain and tongue tie. Urological conditions treated include urinary tract infection, pyelonephritis, urinary incontinence, day and night time wetting, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteric reflux, urinary tract obstruction, duplex kidneys, prenatal uropathy - including prenatal counselling and neuropathic bladder and bowel.

I have performed over 2,000 hernia repairs in childhood and over 500 operations for undescended testes including cases from my NHS and private practice.

I have published 36 peer reviewed articles in relation to paediatric surgery and paediatric urology, have written ten book chapters on paediatric urology topics, as well publishing several comprehensive review articles within paediatric urology.

I continue to pursue academic interests and help strengthen standards of postgraduate education. I have remained, following retirement from the NHS, an examiner for the Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examination in Urology - an International exit examination in Urology. I was an Intercollegiate Specialty Board examiner for the FRCS Urology exit examination from 2007 to 2022 and involved with question writing and standard setting for the intercollegiate examinations. I am a member of the Commissioning Group for Foreskin Condition, The Royal College of Surgeon of England.
