Acid reflux is a common ailment. It is caused from stomach acid leaking into the oesophagus and often results in heartburn, indigestion, chest pain, coughs, a sore throat and voice changes. While most people can control it with medicine, some people need more help.
Symptoms of acid reflux include indigestion, heartburn, chest pain, cough, sore throat, voice changes and asthma. Chronic reflux symptoms can have a negative impact on quality of life, especially at mealtimes.
If acid reflux continues over several years it can lead to a condition known as Barrett's oesophagus – which is believed to be a precursor for oesophageal cancer. Although this risk is small, preventing acid reflux is important.
Stretta is an endoscopic (through the mouth), minimally invasive procedure used to help significantly reduce acid reflux symptoms. Using radiofrequency energy, Stretta remodels the tissue in the oesophagus that causes the symptoms.
Treatment causes your sphincter muscle to become stronger, thicker and less pliable, preventing acid from the stomach refluxing into your throat.
Consultant Laparoscopic Bariatric and Upper GI Surgeons perform the Stretta procedure at Spire Bushey Hospital.
We can't display a fee for this procedure just now. Please contact us for a quote.

Stretta is a minimally invasive procedure, which usually takes around an hour. It is performed under short-lasting general anaesthetic, which means you'll be asleep.
An endoscope is passed passed down the throat, through the mouth to deliver radiofrequency energy which is applied to the muscle of the lower oesophageal sphincter and gastric cardia.
Treatment causes the sphincter to become stronger, thicker and less pliable, preventing acid refluxing from the stomach back into the oesophagus.
Stretta is carried out as a day case and most patients can go home the same day.
After this, you will be taken to your room or comfortable area where you can recover in comfort, rest and recuperate until we feel you’re ready to go home.
You should not experience pain following the procedure and you should see an improvement in your reflux symptoms within a few days.
We will provide you with a supply of all the medicines your consultant feels you need to take home with you after you've left hospital, up to 14 days. This may be at an additional cost to some patients.
Stretta has an excellent safety profile with a low risk of complications compared to other forms of anti-reflux therapy, including surgery.
On rare occasions though, complications can occur. Your consultant will talk to you about the possible risks and complications of having this procedure and how they apply to you.
If you have any questions or concerns, we're ready to help.
