I have been an Orthopaedic Consultant since 2012, being appointed as a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge and subsequently as an Assistant Professor at the University of Cambridge School of Medicine. The majority of my practice is treating people with pelvic, hip, knee and ankle pain, I specialise in lower limb orthopaedic surgery with specific interest in hip replacement surgery, knee arthroscopies, knee replacement surgery, ankle arthroscopies, lower limb sports and trauma injuries, joint pain injections and pelvic fractures.

My clinical practice is based on the key principles of listening, observing and learning, understanding the needs of my patients is at the core of my caring philosophy. My primary goal is to provide my patients with the best and most up to date evidence based treatment to ensure that they get back on track and resume daily activities as soon as possible. If you would like to read individual patient reviews please visit the website link below, where you will find over 180 patient independent 5* reviews.

Regenerative therapies form a core part of my practice specifically PRP and N-stride. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used to relieve the symptoms of persistent and on-going tendon pain, the platelets and plasma are believed to have natural healing properties that encourage the damaged tendons to repair and heal themselves. They may do this by stimulating the production of collagen, which is an important component of tendon and ligament tissue. The N-stride injection is used to treat osteoarthritis of the hip and knee and was developed to provide relief from pain without surgery. It has been shown to be most effective in people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the hip and knee with the benefits of pain relief, reduction in stiffness and inflammation, restored mobility and flexibility and an improvement in cartilage health.

For some knee replacements I use the 3D printed patient customised iTotal Conformis knee implants which are individually designed and manufactured for you, providing a perfect, customised fit that mimics the natural shape of your knee. An implant that is sized and shaped to your precise measurements allows more natural, pain-free movement of the joint. Patients experience less pain after surgery and there is less wear and tear on the implant, meaning that it may last longer. More of the patient’s own healthy bone and ligaments can be preserved and, over time, it is hoped that individuals who have a customised knee replacement experience more stability and more function in the knee.

With increasing numbers of people participating in a wide range of sporting activity I dedicate a significant amount of my private practice to lower limb sporting injuries encompassing a comprehensive review of the whole weight bearing lower limb – pelvis to toes. Injuries to the pelvis, hip, knee and ankle are common and there are various treatment options available. It’s important to understand that a sports injury can lead to chronic problems if left untreated. Common sports injuries include strains and sprains, knee ligament injuries, Achilles tendon injuries, swollen muscles, shin splints and fractures. For further reading please see the Sports Injury & Performance blogs at Carrothers Orthopaedics.

I have been involved in educational instruction throughout my professional career, from medical student teaching to lecturing at international meetings. In addition, to being an OSCE examiner for the University of Toronto during my fellowship year, I currently teach orthopaedic registrars and other junior doctors as well as undergraduate medial students at Cambridge University. I am a ALS and Battlefield ATLS instructor, having taught these courses since 2003.
