Mr Madhavan Rajan

I specialise in Premium cataract surgery and undertake surgery for patients requiring advanced intraocular lenses such as Multifocal and Toric IOL's. In addition, I provide specialist consultations for patients with cornea and external eye disorders and undertake the following procedures in private and NHS practice: Corneal crosslinking for Keratoconus, Corneal transplantation (DSAEK, DMEK and DALK), Dry eye diagnosis and treatment, Common eye problems including contact lens intolerance, infections, blepharitis and assessment of patients with sudden visual alterations.

In the last 20 years, I have undertaken several thousand eye surgical procedures (Cataract and Cornea) with audited outcomes presented to various learned societies and conferences across the world.

I qualified in 1994 and underwent specialist ophthalmic training in London and have 20 years experience in ophthalmology. My interest in corneal surgery led to a research fellowship focusing on corneal wound healing mechanisms in laser refractive surgery at St Thomas’ Hospital, London culminating in a MD degree at the University of London. Subsequently, I spent two years as a corneal, refractive and external eye diseases fellow at Moorfield’s Eye Hospital, London. I was appointed consultant ophthalmic surgeon in 2007 and I am clinical lead of cornea and cataract service at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge and principal supervisor for the corneal fellowship program. I was appointed as Professor of ophthalmic and visual sciences to Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge in 2010.

I am clinical lead for the cataract and corneal service at Cambridge University Hospitals and I hold various roles in the charity organisations (world vision, cambridge eye trust), advisory committees (Ocular transplant, UKISCRS) and UK Universities (Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin) in supervision of PhD's and ophthalmology trainees fellowship program at Addenbrookes Hospital.

At the vision and eye research unit (VERU), I lead a corneal research team with basic science researchers and PhD studentships focused on corneal transplant research, corneal therapeutics, corneal stem cells and advanced intraocular lenses and has several publications in peer reviewed literature. My team and I have recently developed a novel endothelial keratoplasty technique termed Microthin DSAEK with improved patient outcomes, that won the NHS Health enterprise Innovation award and a recent UKISCRS best corneal research award (2015).

In addition to my professional commitments in UK, I am visiting consultant to LifeLine Express charity program in China to serve the underprivileged patients with cataract blindness in rural china and was recently awarded a visiting professor to Liaocheng school of clinical Medicine, China.
