Mr Richard Hardwick

Mr Richard Hardwick

Consultant General Surgeon (upper GI)

MBBS, MD, FRCS

I am a General Surgeon with a specialist interest in oesophageal (gullet), gastric (stomach), gallbladder and hernia surgery. I perform a wide range of laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures for gallstones, acid reflux (GORD), hiatus hernias, and hernias.

I trained in the South West and was then a consultant in Cardiff before relocating to Cambridge in 2001 to establish the Oesophago-gastric Unit. I spent two years in research investigating a condition called Barrett's Oesophagus which is caused by gastro-oesophageal reflux (this causes heartburn). This condition is on the increase and has been linked to a rising incidence of gullet cancer.

I was a Lecturer in Surgery at Bristol Royal Infirmary before moving to Cardiff University Hospital as Senior Lecturer.
