Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital celebrates five year milestone as an Endometriosis Centre of Excellence

Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital are celebrating a milestone five years of accreditation as an Endometriosis Centre of Excellence. Led by world renowned Gynaecological Surgeon and Endometriosis Specialist, Professor Mohamed Mabrouk, President of the European Endometriosis League (EEL), the hospital’s multi-disciplinary team have achieved this high-status accreditation for the fifth year running after becoming the first private endometriosis centre in East Anglia to be accredited by the BSGE in 2020.
Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the condition affects roughly 190 million women globally. Despite these figures, the condition remains widely misdiagnosed. Many women suffer in silence, experiencing debilitating pain that disrupts their daily lives, careers and fertility.
Since the cause of endometriosis remains unknown, curative treatment has yet to be discovered. The management and treatment of severe/deeply infiltrating endometriosis is, however, complex and centres of excellence where a multidisciplinary approach is offered are seen as best practice and the way forward.
Accreditation from the BSGE reflects the very highest standards of care and signifies the Cambridge EndoCare Centre at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital's commitment to excellence in endometriosis treatment. The multidisciplinary team, led by Professor Mabrouk, comprises of consultants and experts in colorectal, urology, radiology and pain management specialties as well as a dedicated specialist nurse.
Since the first accreditation the team have seen more than 3000 patients in clinic and operated on more than 500 patients suffering from endometriosis.
Professor Mohamed Mabrouk at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, explains: “A key aspect of my approach at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital is the ‘individualised approach’. By working as a team, we ensure that patients receive comprehensive, coordinated care that addresses not just their symptoms, but also their long-term health and quality of life. One of the most crucial aspects of my approach, is listening to the patient. Every woman’s experience with endometriosis is unique. Taking the time to understand each patient’s concerns, symptoms and personal goals is fundamental in crafting a strategy that truly meets their needs.”

Kate Muller, Endometriosis Specialist Nurse adds: “Being an Endometriosis Specialist Nurse in the multidisciplinary team, I work alongside colleagues who are experienced and devoted to helping women overcome endometriosis and have a better quality of life, living as symptom and pain free as possible. I feel so privileged to be a part of the highly specialised team to provide comprehensive and personalised care that often goes beyond medical treatment. It’s truly rewarding to see meaningful impact on people’s lives by emotional support and help to feel informed and empowered through their challenging endometriosis journey.”

For those unfamiliar with endometriosis, it is a condition where tissue such as the lining of the uterus grows outside the womb, causing inflammation, scarring and chronic pain. As March marks Endometriosis Awareness Month, it is crucial to shed light on this invisible disease, highlight the struggles of those affected and push for improvements in early diagnosis and treatment.
Professor Mabrouk continues: “I am thrilled that our centre of excellence has retained its BSGE accreditation for the 5th year running. Thanks to every member of the Spire Cambridge Lea EndoCare Endometriosis Centre. Through our dedicated efforts, we have successfully achieved accreditation, which not only recognises our exceptional standards but also establishes us as one of the busiest centres for endometriosis care in the UK.”
