I am a Consultant Neurosurgeon who is primarily based at the University Hospital of Wales where I have my NHS practice. I have fellowship experience in Neuro-oncology and Complex Spinal Surgery. As part of that role, I undertake emergency work in all aspects of adult and paediatric neurosurgery. Providing you with my professional, unbiased and evidence based opinions while tailoring that advice to your specific circumstances is the central principle of my surgical practice.

You can consult me for advice on the most appropriate way to treat degenerative conditions of the spine (neck pains and pains in your arms; sciatica and lower back pain – all which may result in loss of dexterity, co-ordination and mobility). I routinely perform spinal procedures for such conditions.

Besides spinal surgery, I have two very specialist interests: brain tumours, and surgery for many of the facial Pain syndromes such as Trigeminal, Glossopharyngeal and Geniculate Neuralgias.

I am able to help patients through tough decisions with facial pain. The challenge is reaching a diagnosis first, and then choosing a bespoke option for treatment. As a consultant I balance risk vs benefit to find the best option to suit your particular needs.

I perform the majority of microvascular decompressions (MVD) for trigeminal neuralgia in Wales - and I am fortunate to be able to develop my research into the condition.

Awake brain surgery for gliomas is something that is very close to my heart and have spent time watching and learning from Prof Hugues Duffau - a doyen of awake brain surgery for low grade glioma in Montpelier, France. I believe that every opportunity must be harnessed to preserve brain function surrounding invasive brain tumours – and hence I am a passionate advocate of awake surgery.

In NHS Wales, I am the Lead for Neurosurgical Oncology and also the Welsh Cancer Lead for Brain and CNS. I also steer the Facial Pain Network in South and West Wales. From time to time, I provide specialist advice to the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman. I am also an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Neurosurgery.

Discectomy: procedure, benefits, risks and recovery

Mr George Eralil, Consultant Neurosurgeon, explains what a discectomy is and how the procedure is carried out, as well as potential risks. He says 80-90% of patients will be alleviated of pain and make a return to day to day activities and work in four to six weeks – however, it can take up to three months for the scarring to heal.
