Mr Nagappan Kumar

I have been a Consultant in General and Hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery since 2002 and set up the first Liver Unit for Wales in Cardiff. This is the only centre for Liver surgery accredited by the Welsh Government. We have now grown to be one of the large volume Liver centres in the UK performing over 140 liver resections a year.

I perform complex operations on the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts and manage pancreatic problems. I have performed over 800 liver resections and over 1,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies with excellent results.

I am the Welsh representative at the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS). I have been an examiner for the MRCS and the Intercollegiate FRCS exams for many years. I hosted the FRCS exam in 2022 in Cardiff for the Intercollegiate board.

I developed innovative techniques in liver surgery and given talks in National and International forums about this. I have done research that has significantly altered clinical practice for the better. Many of my papers have been published in high impact factor international journals.

I am the co-founder of Foregut Wales, a forum that allows interaction of all the UGI and HPB surgeons in Wales. I run a Foregut Journal club in Cardiff.

I have been a trainer for Undergraduates at Cardiff University for 20 years. I have trained many surgeons who have gone on to become consultants in both UK and abroad. I am a Honorary Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University.

I qualified in Medical Law from Cardiff University in 2010 in Legal Aspects of Medical Practice and do Medico legal work. I deal with injury claims and Medical Negligence.
