I have been an Orthopaedic Consultant at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff since 2008. My elective NHS work is at Llandough Hospital and private work is at Spire Cardiff Hospital.
I specialise in hip and knee surgery and my practice is focused on hip replacement and knee replacement surgery. I do revision surgery for knees and have a tertiary referral practice for this. I also undertake knee arthroscopy – keyhole procedures for the knee.
I perform over 200 joint replacement operations every year. This includes hip and knee replacement operations as well as revision surgery. I do nearly 100 knee arthroscopies every year. I provide the full range of knee replacement service including partial knee replacements, patient specific knee replacements, computer navigation surgery and customised knee replacements. I did the first robotic knee replacement in Wales.
My surgical practice is influenced by my training in Leeds and fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston where I gained extensive experience in complex hip and knee replacement problems. MGH is the flagship hospital of Harvard Medical School. The training has been built upon by years of experience in Cardiff.
My prime objective is a thorough assessment for each individual I meet in the clinic and to decide the best possible, evidence based, option for treatment. I believe in patient centred care and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring everyone gets the best possible care.
I am an honorary lecturer in Orthopaedics for Cardiff University. I am also the regional surgical advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
I have been actively involved in teaching and research throughout my career and have published over 40 research papers, in addition to book chapters in leading reference books and review articles. I am the editor of two books, including a specialist textbook on orthopaedics. I examine for the FRCS Orthopaedic examination conducted by the Royal Colleges of UK.
