Tim Owen is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, who specialises in hip surgery and knee surgery, at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital for Cwm Taf Trust, in South Wales. He has been a consultant for 20 years and has extensive experience in all aspects of lower limb surgery (including hip / knee surgery). He is well qualified to offer advice in all aspects of lower limb orthopaedic surgery. His specialist field is hip and knee replacement surgery, particularly hip replacement and revision hip replacement surgery.
To date he has performed over 2,000 hip replacements, over 1,200 knee replacements and over 300 Hip revision replacements over a 20 year period in both his NHS and private practice. He currently performs over 100 hip replacements and over 50 knee replacements a year. As part of his practice he performs high volume Knee Replacement Surgery. He has proven excellent outcomes for hip and knee replacement on the National Joint Registry.
He also has an interest in joint replacement in the young adult and in complex hip joint replacement surgery, and has performed resurfacing hip replacement for a number of years. In his South Wales NHS practice he performs a high volume of joint replacements annually. He believes it is essential for the modern day joint replacement surgeon to maintain their level of expertise by performing high volume surgery. All patients are reviewed for life. He is the Senior Hip Surgeon at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.
At undergraduate level Tim trained in Cardiff, and qualified in 1986. He performed the early part of his surgical training in South Wales before performing his specialist training in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne between 1991 and 1996. He then completed a specialist hip replacement fellowship in Chicago, USA. Mr Owen performs all types of hip replacement according to the patients needs including resurfacing replacements, uncemented, cemented and hybrid hip replacements. He is a trained specialist Revision Hip and Knee Replacement Surgeon, and is referred complex primary joint replacements and revision hip and knee replacements by numerous colleagues in South Wales. Tim has also trained Registrars in Joint Replacement on the All Wales Orthopaedic Training Programme for a number of years.
As well as joint replacement, Tim still maintains a General Orthopaedic Practice including Trauma Surgery, participating in regular on calls at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. He feels it is important to maintain a trauma practice for the modern day orthopaedic surgeon, and specialises in trauma surgery to and around the hip, in all age groups.
