Spire Cardiff Hospital recognised as a BSGE Endometriosis Centre
21 April 2022
We are delighted to announce that Spire Cardiff Hospital has been recognised as a BSGE Endometriosis Centre, the first private hospital in Wales to be acknowledged with this achievement.
The British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) was founded in 1989 to promote minimal access surgery and its benefits. The society was founded by a group of Consultant Gynaecologists keen to inspire the development of endoscopic technologies.
Over the years the BSGE has expanded to welcome over 1,000 members varying from consultants and specialists to GPs and students. The BSGE has continued to promote the education of the endoscopic approach to diagnosis and treatment as well as promoting the standards for complex endometriosis surgery, encouraging those units meeting the standards to become BSGE recognised endometriosis centres.
The requirements to become a centre include multidisciplinary working practices with pain management specialists (Shefali Kadambane), radiologists (Rob Bleehan and Neil Pugh), urologists (Shibs Datta and Oleg Tatarov), colorectal surgeons (Simon Phillips), clinical nurse specialists (Liz Bruen) and gynaecologists specialising in advanced endometriosis surgery. They also require the clinical nurse specialist, who is knowledgeable regarding endometriosis as well as holistic care [and] holding clinics to submit data to the BSGE endometriosis centres database about the patients who have surgery to showcase that there is an increasing knowledge regarding the benefits and complications of this challenging surgery. An exemplar surgical video is also required to be submitted.
Fiona Conway, Hospital Director at Spire Cardiff Hospital commented, “Being recognised as a BSGE Endometriosis Centre is a fantastic achievement and we are pleased to hear of the acknowledgement. Our Consultant Gynaecologists at the hospital provide an exceptional level of service to our patients and always seek to improve the offering. Well done to all involved.”
Mr Richard Penketh, Consultant Gynaecologist, spoke about the achievement saying, “I am thrilled to have played a part in Spire Cardiff Hospital being recognised as a BSGE Endometriosis Centre. This is a great accomplishment and a credit to the service we are able to offer. Mrs Liz Bruen, Endometriosis Clinical Nurse Specialist has been part of the team for many years at Spire Cardiff Hospital, but is now able to offer counselling and advice clinics at the hospital and I feel this will be a great asset to the support we offer our patients in 2022 and beyond.”
