Spire Cardiff secures outstanding outcome from Healthcare Inspectorate Wales

12 November 2020

Spire Cardiff Hospital has received the best possible outcome from an inspection by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), which found that there are no areas of improvement needed at the hospital and many examples of excellent practice.

Inspectors carried out a remote inspection of Spire’s hospital in October as part of its programme of quality assurance work. The quality check focused on four key areas:

  • COVID-19 arrangements
  • Environment
  • Infection prevention
  • Control and governance

HIW was provided with information and evidence to demonstrate how patients are provided with safe and effective care, protected from harm and treated with dignity. The review also focused on the safety of visitors and staff.

The review found that Spire Cardiff Hospital, which has supported the NHS through the COVID-19 crisis by providing urgent care and cancer treatment, reacted promptly to the pandemic and implemented a series of measures to ensure patient, staff and visitor safety. HIW commended the hospital for steps it has put in place to create a safe environment, including additional training, daily updates on national and corporate guidance, COVID screening prior to admission and temperature checking of all staff and patients as well as the introduction of regular PPE stations.

The inspection found that the hospital and staff provide patients with personal and tailored care, with pre-assessments and risk assessments capturing any physical needs and ensuring emotional and social support are provided by staff. Safeguarding policies are also in place to help promote patient dignity and safety.

Hospital management were seen to be effectively managing staffing levels, by ensuring sufficient and appropriately-skilled staffed are on the rota to meet the needs of patients.

Spire Cardiff Hospital has 66 private en-suite rooms and facilities that include three main theatres, a daycase unit, an orthopaedic centre of excellence, outpatients and a physiotherapy suite. It offers outpatient, daycase and inpatient services for a range of specialties including orthopaedics, general surgery, ophthalmology, gynaecology, pain management, urology, breast service, ENT, cardiology and private GP services.

Fiona Conway, Hospital Director at Spire Cardiff, said: “We are very pleased that the hard work and dedication of our staff has been recognised by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales. Patient safety and care is our number one priority, and we are extremely proud that the high levels of care and new procedures we have put in place to keep colleagues and patients safe during the COVID-19 crisis have been acknowledged by the inspectors.”
