Virtual consultations:
I am an expert in laparoscopic gallbladder and colorectal operations. I have a specialist interest in open and laparoscopic repair of all types of abdominal wall hernias. Furthermore, I am a JAG-accredited endoscopist and an expert in both diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy). I have a sub-specialist interest in proctology. I provide a comprehensive surgical service for conditions like anal fissure (fissurectomy, sphincterotomy); haemorrhoids (banding, THD, HALO, mucopexy, stapled haemorrhoidectomy (alternatively known as PPH), ligasure and excisional haemorrhoidectomy; and fistula surgery (fistulotomy, seton, fistula biological plugs).
In addition to these I also carry out procedures including: minimally invasive procedures for haemorrhoids (THD/HALO) and stapled haemorrhoidectomy, fistula in ano, treatment for anal fissure and cleft lift procedure for pilonidal sinus.
To date, I have performed over 8,000 endoscopy procedures, over 4,000 laparoscopic procedures for gallbladder, hernia repair and colorectal resections, plus over 2,000 procedures for anal fissure, haemorrhoids and fistula.
My key performance indicators and quality and safety outcomes for colonoscopy and gastroscopy are in accordance with JAG, national and international standards. My clinical and operative outcomes are of high standards. My conversion and complication rates are below the national average.
I have been a consultant laparoscopic and colorectal surgeon for over 10 years. Prior to that, I spent 17 years in post-registration training. I have had the opportunity of being exposed to all major sub-specialties within general surgery. I have worked in four major laparoscopic units throughout the UK where I have acquired advanced training in general and laparoscopic surgery. This has given me considerable experience. The last three years of my specialist training in the Yorkshire Deanery were mainly in laparoscopy and colorectal surgery. I am an accredited trainer on JETS for upper and lower GI endoscopy since 2007 and I am an accredited bowel scope screener. In my current NHS practice, I have a major commitment to GI endoscopy. Endoscopy also constitutes a significant proportion of my private practice.
I enjoy the challenge and rewards of teaching and consider it an integral and vital part of my own continuing education. I am regularly involved in teaching general surgery and colorectal surgery trainees of all levels and medical students from the University of Liverpool. I regularly mentor nurses attending the surgical assistant course. I provide formal teaching and lecturing to GPs in the Cheshire and Manchester area.
I undertake medico-legal work within my areas of expertise: general surgery, colorectal surgery, laparoscopic surgery and abdominal trauma. My medico-legal work includes personal injury and medical negligence cases. I find that I have roughly plaintiff (70%) / defendant (20%) case mix, and 10% single joint expert cases. I have undertaken instructional courses in court compliance and medico-legal report writing for personal injuries and clinical negligence claims. I understand my duty as an expert witness to the court and Part 35 of the Civil Procedure Rules. I am aware of the Jackson reforms and fully understand the need to control costs and adhere to court time tables.

My passion for clinical research is infinite. I have completed several research projects which culminated in several publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. Currently I am leading research projects in the fields of laparoscopic and colorectal surgery.
I am also a non-editorial reviewer for a number of surgical journals. My own research and my role as a reviewer have fine-tuned my abilities to critically evaluate scientific evidence in order to optimise the results for my patients.

Consultant General, Laparoscopic and Colorectal Surgeon, Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
My current interests are academic and minimal access training. I am married with three children and I enjoy listening to music and cycling. I have recently taken a growing interest in gardening, a hobby which hopefully reflects maturity rather than senility.
