Specialises in
I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Countess of Chester Hospital where I am the clinical lead for the emergency eye service and co-lead for oculoplastic surgery. I have been training and working in ophthalmology for over 12 years and am an expert in cataract surgery and cosmetic eyelid surgery.Â
To date I have performed over 2,000 cataract operations and over 2,000 oculoplastic procedures in my NHS and private practice.
My first area of specialist interest and expertise is oculoplastic and cosmetic eyelid surgery. I have specific interest in upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty (removal of eyebags), ptosis (droopy eyelid) correction, ectropion/entropion correction (outward and in-rolled eyelids), and eyelid lumps/cancer removal followed by eyelid reconstruction.
My second area of specialist interest and expertise is precision cataract surgery. I offer monofocal, extended depth of focus and toric intraocular lenses. I see patients at Spire Cheshire and I have a one-stop diagnostic clinic in Tarporley where I perform all the necessary eye measurements and can recommend the best options to suit you and your lifestyle.
My third area of specialist interest and expertise is lacrimal surgery. Lacrimal surgery is for patients who have blocked tear ducts and hence suffer from persistent watery eyes. I perform both endonasal (scar-free) and external dacryocystorhinostomy or 'DCR' for short (tear-duct bypass surgery).
Being the lead for the emergency eye services at the Countess of Chester, I am also very comfortable seeing all other ophthalmic complaints. Anything I feel out of my area of expertise or needs further specialist input I will refer onto the appropriate colleague.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Nicholas Hickley at Spire include:
