I am a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (STH) and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Sheffield Medical School with over 10 years of experience. I am the lead for colorectal cancer and colorectal cancer multidisciplinary team lead at the trust. My private practice is at Spire Claremont Hospital.
I qualified from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 2000. I spent two years in clinical research at St James’s Hospital Leeds and was awarded the prestigious Bert Inman Fellowship grant and an MD from the University of Leeds. My Higher Surgical Training was in Yorkshire where I trained in all aspects of general and colorectal surgery.
I subsequently completed two specialist colorectal fellowships in Australia at renowned centres. My first fellowship was at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide working with Professor David Wattchow who is well known for his excellent outcomes after complex colorectal cancer surgery. My second fellowship was at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide with the pioneering laparoscopic colorectal surgeon Professor Peter Hewett and gained extensive experience of advanced laparoscopic surgery.
I am one of the few surgeons in Sheffield trained in robotic colorectal surgery and perform robotic surgery at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. I also have a large experience in laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease with excellent results.
I perform all types of hernia repair (umbilical, inguinal, incisional, recurrent) and have extensive experience with excellent results.
I have high level of expertise at colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy and perform high volumes with excellent outcomes as measured by local and national audits.
I have considerable experience of treating perianal conditions with up-to-date techniques as day case procedures. I treat haemorrhoids, anal skin tags, fissures, fistula in ano and am an anal cancer surgeon.
I am actively involved in clinical research and teaching and training of medical students and am the undergraduate lead for the Sheffield Medical School. I teach on the master’s in surgery degree course at the University of Edinburgh.
