Mr Matthew Hampton

Consultant Orthopaedic Knee and Sports Surgeon

MBChB, FRCS (Tr&Orth)

I am a consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeon at Sheffield Teaching hospitals, with a private practice at Spire Claremont Hospital.

I offer the full spectrum of knee surgery including soft tissue/arthroscopic procedures and primary knee arthroplasty. At Sheffield Teaching hospitals, I have a complex tertiary referral practice for knee ligament injuries, cartilage repair/transplantation, osteotomy and patella instability (tracheoplasty). My aim is to help keep patients fit and active through both non-operative and operative interventions.

I completed my higher surgical training on the South Yorkshire rotation, and I was awarded his completion of training in 2022. I then went on to complete prestigious fellowships specialising solely in knee surgery at the Guys and St Thomas Hospitals in London and the internationally renowned Robert Jones Agnes Hunt orthopaedic hospital in Oswestry. I also spent time learning advanced and specialist sports knee interventions from world renowned surgeons in America (Brian Cole) and Canada (Alan Getgood).

Alongside my clinical work I am heavily involved in clinical research striving to improve patient outcomes in knee surgery, with over 50 peer reviewed publications and both national and international presentations. I previously served as the research fellow for the British Association for Surgery of the knee (BASK) and i currently sit on the executive committee as a member at large for the British Orthopaedic Sports Trauma and Arthroscopy Association (BOSTAA).

Working at a teaching hospital, I am actively engaged in training the next generation of knee surgeons. Alongside training specialist registrars I supervise a pre consultant fellowship with my colleagues at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals to enable them to treat patients with knee conditions to the best of their ability.
