Professor Stephen Radley

Professor Stephen Radley

Consultant Gynaecologist

MD, MA, FRCS, FRCOG

Having worked as a full time NHS consultant gynaecologist in the Jessop Wing of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals since 2001, I have developed specialist clinical services, teaching, training, research and innovation in urogynaecology and other areas of healthcare.

I specialise in urogynaecology and female urology, including the assessment, medical and surgical treatment of pelvic floor disorders, including bladder, bowel, vaginal and sexual conditions. I have close clinical links with other specialists including urologists, colorectal surgeons, physiotherapists and specialist nurses working in this area.

I am an accomplished reconstructive surgeon in female urinary incontinence and prolapse, including vaginal, abdominal, endoscopic, minimal access and open procedures. I undertake vaginal reconstruction, including prolapse surgery; repair, perineorrhaphy, sacro-spinous ligament fixation, uterus-preserving surgery and hysterectomy. I undertake native-tissue repair and do not perform mesh implantation surgery, though I perform mesh removal surgery as part of the regional NHS mesh centre at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.

I carry out urodynamics and other investigations of lower urinary tract function, including cystoscopy. I am able to access a variety of specialist pelvic imaging services, including ultrasound, CT and MRI scanning. I perform surgical procedures for incontinence including colposuspension, urethral bulking, fascial sling and botox for the treatment of bladder disorders including urinary incontinence.

I undertake general gynaecology assessments and treatments, including a variety of surgical procedures, including laparoscopy, hysteroscopy and hysterectomy, with or without the removal of ovaries and fallopian tubes.

To date I have performed over 2,000 pelvic floor procedures, including over 1,000 prolapse and incontinence operations, and over 500 cystoscopic procedures, including Botox for overactive bladder and urethral bulking for stress incontinence.

I have a strong track record for research, evaluating medical and surgical treatments, quality of life assessment and outcomes. I am actively involved in a number of ongoing studies; locally, nationally and internationally.

I conceived and developed 'ePAQ' (electronic Personal Assessment Questionnaire) which is now widely used in over 20 NHS hospitals, including for the online assessment of patients with pelvic floor conditions, pre-operative assessment, paediatric dentistry, oncology and vascular services. Now being developed for use in other areas of healthcare, including skin disorders, cancer and HIV.

I conceived and developed 'BlaST' (Bladder Shape Test) now the focus of an ongoing programme of research, using 3-D ultrasound to assess bladder disorders including incontinence.

I have trained in both Reconstructive Female Urology and Gynaecology and am part of a multidisciplinary team of experts providing specialist services in this field. As prime-mover and co-founder of the Sheffield Urogynaecology Unit, I oversaw its accreditation as a national training centre for specialist services in pelvic floor disorders and women's health.

As Director of Research for the Jessop Wing, I led the establishment of the high-performing Academic Directorate of Obstetrics Gynaecology and Neonatology. In 2018 I was granted an honorary chair, professor, at the University of Sheffield.

I have published widely on outcomes following surgical treatment for pelvic floor disorders, including incontinence surgery and prolapse.

I am committed to teaching in the specialty, including supervision and teaching of medical students, medical and other clinical staff. I have supervised students to degrees of PhD, MD, MPhil, MSc, BSc and BMedSci and am currently co-supervising a number of University of Sheffield and Leeds Beckett University PhD, MD and MSc students. I have examined students for MD and PhD at the Universities of Sheffield (2019), Plymouth (2019) and Birmingham (2021).
