Preparing for your treatment

For more information on visiting hours, our food, what to pack if you're staying with us, parking and all those other important practicalities, please visit our patient information pages.

Our dedicated team will also give you tailored advice to follow in the run up to your visit.

Before attending for your CPET, please:

  • Do not eat a heavy meal or consume caffeine for 2 hours before
  • Do not take alcohol for 24 hours before
  • Do not participate in vigorous activity 24 hours before
  • Wear loose fit comfortable clothing to exercise in, including trainers or non-slip shoes
  • Do not smoke for at least 8 hours prior
  • Continue normal medication regime

The procedure

During the CPET test the patient will be required to perform exercise on an upright bicycle or on a treadmill whilst wearing a mask.

Each breath will be measured to assess the capacity of the lungs during rest and exercise, and is compared to normative values. The heart will also be recorded through ECG prior to, during and post exercise.

The total appointment time will be for one hour; however the patient will only be required to exercise for approximately 10 minutes.  The test may be maximal or submaximal depending on consultant recommendations.

What information will be analysed?

  • Lung Function: Flow volume loops
  • Oxygen Consumption during exercise  ( Aerobic Capacity)
  • Anaerobic Threshold
  • ECG, Blood Pressure and O₂ Saturation
