Mr Philip Conaghan

Mr Philip Conaghan

Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon

MA BM BCh DM FRCS

I was appointed to the General Surgery Department at the Royal Berkshire Hospital as a Colorectal and General Surgeon in 2009. I graduated from Oxford University Medical School in 1995 and subsequently trained in Norwich, London and then back in Oxford. Following the completion of surgical training in 2008 I secured one of the prestigious Ethicon laparoscopic colorectal fellowships in Nottingham in 2008 before being appointed to the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

I was awarded a DM post-graduate degree from Oxford University for my research into bowel cancer.

I specialise in colorectal surgery including laparoscopic (keyhole) bowel surgery for bowel cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, the treatment of perianal conditions such as haemorrhoids, fissures and fistulae and all types of abdominal wall and groin hernias and procedures.

I am experienced in diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy as well as diagnostic gastroscopies (OGD). I have an excellent completion record (>97% for 2010-2015) and polyp-detection record for colonoscopy and carry out about 220 colonoscopies per year.

In addition to my clinical work, I examine regularly for Oxford University Medical School and teach surgeons in training courses run by the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
