Specialises in
I specialise in all aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery including injuries, fractures and dislocations. I use the most up to date techniques in arthroscopic surgery and minimally invasive total shoulder replacements, including the stemless Verso total shoulder replacement which I designed.
I am founder and director of the Reading Shoulder Unit, an international centre of excellence. The unit is a world centre for shoulder replacement. I have a long association with Spire Dunedin Hospital, having worked in Reading since the mid 90s. In 1998 I was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and established the Reading Shoulder Unit with Stephen Copeland. I developed and introduced numerous arthroscopic and open novel surgical techniques, including resurfacing shoulder replacement, and designed the Verso minimally invasive stemless reverse total shoulder replacement that now has 19 years of excellent results!
Many of the UK shoulder surgeons were trained under me at the Reading shoulder unit and the unit attracts visiting surgeons from around the world that come to learn new surgical techniques.
I graduated from the Hebrew University and Hadassah School of Medicine, Jerusalem, in 1982, gaining the first prize in surgery. After completion of my military service at the rank of Major, I completed my orthopaedic surgical training at the Sheba Medical Centre, in Israel.
In 1992 I was appointed Instructor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, where I carried out significant research. In 1995 I was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Chief of Shoulder Surgery at Soroka Medical Centre and lecturer in Orthopaedic Surgery at the faculty of Health and Science at the Ben-Gurion University, Israel.
I am a founding member and the first secretary of the Israeli Shoulder and Elbow Society, a member of the European Society of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) and corresponding member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association and Israeli Orthopaedic Association.
I am Associate Professor of Orthopaedic and Biomechanics research at Brunel University, London between 2008 - 2016 and since 2020, I have been Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the faculty of Health and Science at the Ben-Gurion University, Israel.
My team and I, under my guidance, were awarded many prizes: The SECEC Best paper prize (1999), BESS best poster in 2008, BESS Best technique paper in 2011 and the prestigious Kessel best research award of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society Twice, in 2010 and 2017.
I invented and have been involved in the development of numerous new surgical instruments and devices and am meticulous in recording surgical details and surgical outcomes.
I have been awarded the Bronze National clinical excellence and Distinction award for my contributions for the NHS.
