Reduces feelings of hunger and capacity to eat by shrinking your stomach.
At Spire Dunedin Hospital, our highly skilled surgeons and expert aftercare team offer gastric sleeve surgery to help you lose weight if severe obesity is affecting your health.
During gastric sleeve surgery, your surgeon will remove part of your stomach. This reduces your stomach size, limiting the amount you can eat before feeling full and reducing your appetite.

The price shown is the ‘from price’ (ie the minimum cost of the procedure). Please note that for some procedures the actual price you are quoted may vary significantly and can increase depending on your choice of Consultant (who is an independent practitioner and not an employee of Spire). The fees charged by Consultants and Anaesthetists are set independently and are outside the control of Spire. The price may also vary depending on the type of anaesthetic, implant or drug used, and your medical history.
Spire Dunedin Hospital can provide you with a single, fixed price for your procedure so there are no surprises. Please read Spire Healthcare's terms and conditions for full details of what’s included and excluded in your fixed price when paying for yourself. Your consultations
You’ll meet one of our experienced bariatric surgeons in one of our 15 easily accessible, private consultation rooms. During the consultation, we’ll ask you about your medical history and discuss:
You’ll have a chance to ask your consultant any questions you may have. Some people find it helps to bring a list of questions with them and make notes as they go along.
If you decide to go ahead with gastric sleeve surgery, you’ll also meet a dietitian, a psychologist, a bariatric nurse and a pre-op nurse so they can further assess if surgery is right for you. You may need to start a pre-operative diet before surgery, dependant on your procedure. You’ll also need to have a pre-operative assessment which may include:
When you arrive on the day of your surgery, we’ll show you to your own private en-suite room where you’ll have access to all the facilities you’d expect, including:
You’ll meet your consultant, anaesthetist and the surgical team. Before the operation, you’ll be given a general anaesthetic and once ready, your consultant will carry out the surgery to remove part of your stomach.
If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they're welcome to wait in our lounge, restaurant or our garden, if the weather is good, while you have your operation.
The surgery usually takes one to two hours, but you’ll stay in hospital for three to five days after your surgery.
After surgery, our nursing team will give you pain relief to help you deal with any discomfort from the surgery.
Once you leave hospital, we provide follow-up appointments with you for up to two years to check your weight loss progress. You'll have up to four appointments with your consultant and up to seven with either your dietitian or bariatric nurse.
