Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is an umbrella term used for a number of specific injuries caused by the repetitive movement of a particular part of the body. Specifically, RSI is known as an occupational overuse syndrome that affects nerves, tendons, and muscles.
Ensuring frequent breaks from work done in one particular position, and stretches for the arms and wrists can be helpful in preventing the onset of RSI.
Symptoms may include pain, tingling, numbness, burning, swelling, and weakness in the affected area.
Rest is probably the most important aspect of this condition as it tends to be brought on by overuse. Anti-inflammatories, painkillers, hot/cold packs, rest and massage can all be useful in the treatment of RSI.
Physiotherapy can be helpful in assessing the soft tissues affected, advising on appropriate exercises to ensure a good recovery.
We work and liaise very closely with our consultants who operate at Spire Dunedin Hospital, which gives our patients an unprecedented level of care. Should we feel your condition requires further intervention we are able to arrange a referral to a Consultant for a scan.
