My areas of special interest are reproductive medicine, which encompasses management of women with infertility problems, endocrine investigations, myomectomy for uterine fibroids, reversals of sterilisations and also dealing with minimal to moderate endometriosis both medically, surgically and through minimal access route (ablation with helium laser and excision where possible).
I have worked as a Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist in NHS Fife since 1990 and have led the development of minimal access surgery, chronic pelvic pain clinic and infertility services in the region. I served as a Clinical Director for eight years and was instrumental in setting quality improvement agenda in NHS Fife for obstetric services.
I have published research papers in the area of pelvic endometriosis and its effect on infertility, menstrual symptoms and pelvic pain. I also have a longstanding interest in the clinical management of patients with chronic pelvic pain with or without infertility. I lead this service in Fife and also see patients at Spire Murrayfield Hospital.
I have wide experience in the management of general gynaecological conditions including management of heavy menstrual bleeding, benign vulval disease and pelvic floor disorders.
For the management of women with menstrual disorders, I offer pharmaceutical methods, insert Mirena IUS, undertake endometrial ablations and if required undertake hysterectomy. In suitable patients I will consider carrying out vaginal hysterectomy as an alternative to minimal laparoscopic access as it has a shorter length of stay in the hospital and healing without a scar on the abdomen. I led a four year long National Audit for heavy menstrual bleeding in England and Wales between 2010-2014. As part of reproductive endocrine service,
I looks after patients with hirsutism (excessive hair growth on face), hormone replacement treatment, requiring endocrine investigations and also see women who are at increased risk of developing malignant disease, especially with BRCA1 gene requiring prophylactic oophorectomy.
I am also interested in issues related to benign vulval disease, and vulvodynia where he uses pharmaceutical and surgical methods for management. I also have experience in managing women with prolapse.
I have served on several local, national and international committees dealing with issues related to womens’ health, and have also served as Vice President Standards at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists where I led the development of documents describing standards of care in obstetrics and gynaecology (accessible at the RCOG website).
I also chaired the working party for recertification of specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology and of late have been working as Senior Clinical Advisor to the Office of Research and Clinical Audit based at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists. I have also led initiatives for quality improvement in Europe and am currently serving as President of the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology based in Brussels.
I have published widely: have edited 5 books, published 150 papers in peer reviewed journals and have delivered more than 150 lectures by invitation nationally and internationally. I serve on the editorial boards of several key journals in obstetrics and gynaecology. My annual appraisals are up to date and fully compliant with the CPD programme of the RCOG.
