Virtual consultations:
I am a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon working in Edinburgh and have been a full-time NHS consultant of 12 years standing. I work as a specialist Colorectal Surgeon in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh - this is the largest dedicated Colorectal Unit in the UK and probably Europe.
I graduated with a BSc in Chemistry before reading medicine. I qualified with an MB ChB from Edinburgh in 1990. My surgical training was largely in Edinburgh and South East Scotland with junior posts in Leeds and Manchester. I was awarded my MD in colorectal cancer genetics in 1999. I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and have recently been awarded my Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh without examination. I work in Spire Shawfair Park's endoscopy suite which holds JAG accreditation.
I am a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. I am also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery at the University of Edinburgh and am a regular Surgical Tutor for the European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons.
I consult privately at the Spire Murrayfield Hospital. My practice covers all areas of Coloproctology. I have been instrumental in developing laparoscopic colorectal surgery in Edinburgh and have also established an advanced therapeutic colonoscopy service in Edinburgh. I am a founding member of the Edinburgh Colorectal Specialists LLP.
I offer consultations for the following conditions and symptoms: rectal bleeding, alteration in bowel habit, lower abdominal pain, haemorrhoids, fistula, fissure, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, incontinence, rectal prolapse and diverticular disease. I will also see and treat hernias.
My surgical practice consists of all aspects of coloproctology with sub-specialisation in laparoscopic (keyhole) colorectal surgery, advanced colonoscopy techniques such as polypectomy and endoscopic mucosal resection, pelvic floor disorders and complex pelvic surgery for endometriosis. I also perform surgery for pelvic floor disorders such as advanced prolapse surgery, ventral rectopexy and sacral nerve stimulation. Other surgical treatments performed are new haemorrhoid treatments such as haemorrhoidal artery ligation operation (HALO) the “painless” haemorrhoid operation; the ligation of inter-sphincteric fistula tract operation (LIFT).
