I trained in medicine at Newcastle University and spent my basic surgical training time in the North East of England. I then moved to Edinburgh to undertake my ENT specialist training. This advanced training was augmented by time spent in Dundee, Iowa (USA) and Christchurch (New Zealand).
I was then appointed as a Consultant Head and Neck Surgeon in Fife for two years prior to taking up my current appointment as a Head and Neck Cancer Surgeon in the Department of Otolaryngology in Edinburgh in 2009.
I am fully trained in all aspects of ear, nose and throat surgery. My main practice and expertise is in thyroid surgery and laryngology. I am part of the NHS Lothian Endocrine Multidisciplinary Group and provide a full range of surgical interventions for thyroid problems benign and malignant. I run a regular multidisciplinary voice clinic in the NHS and bring this expertise to my private patients. I helped set up a neck-lump assessment clinic in Edinburgh and continue to fully contribute to this.
I have a strong research background in problems of voice and swallowing and I completed a masters degree in advanced speech and swallowing research at Newcastle University. My clinical research interest is in pre-cancerous disease in the larynx (voice box).
