Before seeing my GP, I would like advice on seeing a specialist privately.

If you have health insurance - simply call Spire Edinburgh Hospitals outpatient appointments team on 0131 316 2530. They will discuss your needs and the next steps to arranging a consultation with us.

If you don’t have insurance, our self-pay team will be happy to discuss your needs and let you know whether a GP referral is required to see one of our specialists. I know the type or name of the specialist I want to see. How do I book?

If you have health insurance, call Spire Edinburgh Hospitals outpatient appointments team on 0131 316 2530 to find out about consultant appointment availability. You will need to contact your insurer to confirm whether you are covered for your consultation and whether you need a GP referral. If so, visit your GP and ask to be referred to a specialist at Spire.

If you don’t have insurance, and would like more information on our services, to obtain a price or to book an appointment call our self-pay team on 0131 316 2507, alternatively you can submit an enquiry via the enquire button located at the top of this page. Our advisors will also discuss if you’ll need to get a GP referral.

I don't have time to see my NHS GP, but I know the type or name of the specialist I want to see.

If you have insurance, in some cases your insurer will require you to have a GP referral before you can see a specialist privately, please check with your insurance company prior to making an appointment.   

If you don’t have insurance, we may be able to offer you an appointment with the consultant of your choice without a referral. Call one of our self-pay advisors on 0131 316 2507, alternatively you can submit an online enquiry.

I've seen my GP and received a referral to a specialist. How do I do this privately?

If you have insurance, call your local Spire hospital to book an appointment with the same consultant or another specialist with similar expertise.

You should contact your insurer to confirm whether you are covered for the consultation and any subsequent treatment. If your GP referral letter is addressed to a different consultant, you may need to request an updated letter.

If you don’t have insurance, call us to book an appointment with one of our consultants. If your GP referral letter is addressed to a different consultant, you may need to request an updated letter.

I have already seen a specialist on the NHS but want to continue my treatment privately.

If you have insurance, you should confirm with your insurer that you are covered for the treatment.  You may need a new referral or you may simply be able to transfer under the same consultant. If you can transfer under the same consultant please contact our admissions team on 0131 316 2510 or if you require an initial consultation with a new consultant, please contact our insured outpatient booking team on 0131 316 2530.

If you don’t have insurance, call one of our self-pay advisors on 0131 316 2507, or you can submit an enquiry via the enquire button located at the top of this page. Our advisors will help you obtain a price for your treatment and to find out how we can help you to transfer from NHS to private care. You may need a new referral or you may simply be able to transfer under the same consultant.

A physiotherapist, osteopath, optician or audiologist has suggested that I see a specialist.

If you have insurance, call your our outpatient booking team on 0131 316 2530 to book an appointment with one of our consultants. To claim on your insurance, you may need a referral letter from the health practitioner you saw, or from your GP.

If you don’t have insurance, we may be able to offer you an appointment with the consultant of your choice without a GP referral. Call one of our self-pay advisors on 0131 316 2507, or submit an online enquiry. We can then confirm whether you will need a referral letter from the health practitioner you saw.

How do I pay for my treatment?

We welcome all patients and our inclusive prices and payment plans make it easy and affordable, even if you don’t have medical insurance.

We accept payment by credit card (not American Express), debit card or bankers’ draft. Spire Edinburgh Hospitals does not accept cash.
