Your consultations
Your first appointment will be with a bariatric nurse specialist and is free of charge. Following that, you'll have an appointment with a consultant and, if needed, other members of the clinical team.
During your consultation, your consultant will talk to you about your medical history. They'll be able to explain:
There’ll be plenty of time to discuss any questions or concerns. You might find it helpful to think of some questions beforehand and make notes during your consultation.
Before going ahead with gastric sleeve surgery, you’ll need to have a pre-operative assessment.
When you arrive on the day of your surgery, we’ll show you to your own private en-suite room. You’ll meet your consultant, anaesthetist and the surgical team.
Before the operation, you’ll be given a general anaesthetic and once ready, your consultant will carry out the surgery.
If you’ve come with a friend or family member, they’re welcome to wait in our lounge while you have your operation.
The surgery usually takes one to two hours, but you’ll stay in hospital for approximately two days.
After surgery, our nursing team will give you pain relief to help you deal with any pain or discomfort from the surgery.
We’ll have follow-up appointments with you after you leave hospital to check you're recovering and losing weight as expected. Seven to 10 days after your operation, you'll see a bariatric nurse specialist. You'll have appointments with a dietitian at six to eight weeks after and then every 10-12 weeks for one year. Your consultant will have a final appointment with you after one year. You can have other appointments during this time if requested.
Although everyone’s different and you should always follow your consultant's advice, here’s a typical recovery guide for gastric sleeve surgery:
