Getting here
Spire Edinburgh Hospitals are in east and south-west Edinburgh. Spire Murrayfield is a ten-minute drive from Edinburgh Haymarket train station, while Spire Shawfair Park is accessible by bus. Free on-site parking is available to patients and visitors at both sites.
Your consultations
For your appointments, you’ll meet your consultant in one of our consultation rooms.
Our orthopaedic consultants specialise in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal (bone and muscle) conditions. Here’s what will happen before your treatment:
You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss your expectations. Your consultant will then be able to outline a treatment and care plan that’s tailored to you.
Your consultant and surgical team will prepare you for your operation.
Anaesthetic options
When you’ve had time to settle into your private room, your anaesthetist will administer a general anaesthetic, where you’re completely asleep, or an epidural (spinal anaesthetic) where you’ll be numb from the waist down. If you’re having an epidural, you can also have sedatives to help you relax.
During your operation
Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, your surgeon will make one or more incisions in your hip, remove both the socket and the top of your thigh bone and replace them with a new artificial hip joint. A hip replacement surgery usually takes an hour to an hour and a half.
Your private room
When you choose Spire Edinburgh Hospitals for your hip replacement, you’ll stay with us for three to five days. You’ll be given a clean, private bedroom to settle into, and our ward staff will be on-hand to keep you comfortable throughout your stay.
What happens
You’ll receive pain relief medication to help you recover in comfort. Your physiotherapist will get you moving as soon as you feel ready and will provide exercises to help you make the most of your hip replacement.
When you’re ready, your physiotherapist will help you walk again and provide exercises to boost your recovery.
Although everybody’s different and you should always follow your consultant’s advice, here’s a typical recovery timeline for knee replacement surgery:

Week 12

You'll be able to leave hospital
