I am a Consultant Cardiologist at the renowned Lancashire Cardiac Centre, Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. My specialist area of expertise is in cardiac imaging; in particular, cardiac MRI (heart MRI) and advanced echocardiography (transoesophageal echocardiogram and stress echocardiogram). I take pride in being able to offer non-invasive cardiac imaging options in order to provide accurate diagnosis of heart conditions to guide treatment and management plans.
To date, I have performed and reported over 1,000 Cardiac MRI scans with diverse heart conditions.
Cardiac MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a non-invasive, radiation-free, heart scan which demonstrates detailed pictures of the heart. It provides accurate information on the structure of the heart and blood vessels, including how well they are working, and can detect heart muscle scar and inflammation.
Cardiac MRI is therefore extremely useful in assessing heart function, causes of heart failure (cardiomyopathy), causes of heart muscle thickening (hypertrophy), causes of chest pains (eg inflammation of heart lining/heart muscle) and breathlessness, the extent of heart attack scar to guide stents/heart bypass (viability), heart valve disease and disease of the aorta. This scan helps clinicians and patients in gaining a clearer understanding of heart conditions to plan appropriate treatment.
I completed my cardiology specialty training in the Northwest region and have achieved the highest level of accreditations (Level 3) in both transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE). In addition to the extensive specialist training, I was awarded the Clinical Research fellowship in Cardiac MRI. I underwent comprehensive training at Leeds General Infirmary and am fully accredited in Cardiac MRI (Level 3 EACVI). My research work focused on "The investigation of mitral valve disease with cardiac MRI" and this has led to a postgraduate MD degree.
I am also passionate about medical education and hold the AFHEA accreditation. As an expert in cardiac imaging, I am regularly invited as a faculty member and lecturer to national cardiology conferences. I remain active in research and have over 30 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and have presented at both national and international conferences.
