I am a highly experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist, Cataract and Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Lead Clinician for Vitreoretinal Services at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals since 2015. I undertake routine and complex cataract surgery, secondary lens implantation and lens exchange procedures. I regularly receive referrals from colleagues for challenging and complex cataract cases and management of complications following cataract surgery.
I regularly undertake vitreo-retinal microsurgical procedures (pars plana vitrectomy) for treatment of various conditions: epiretinal membrane, macular hole, vitreomacular traction (VMT), floaters, dislocated or opacified lenses needing lens exchange, retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, diabetic eye disease needing surgery, trauma etc.
Over my 24-year career in Ophthalmology, I have gained excellent experience in general Ophthalmology and its sub-specialties, particularly in surgical and medical retina. I have performed over 7,000 procedures which include both routine and complex cataract surgeries involving various techniques. I have performed over 4,500 cataract and lens-related procedures and also undertaken high-volume cataract surgery. I regularly perform routine and complex vitreo-retinal microsurgical procedures (including pars plana vitrectomy) for various conditions.
I also have the expertise in various ophthalmic laser treatments: retinal (retinal tears, diabetes etc), following cataract surgery (YAG capsulotomy), and for prevention of angle closure glaucoma (YAG iridotomy).
Having obtained my initial medical qualification (MBBS) in India, graduating in 1998, I went on to complete further Ophthalmology training whilst gaining excellent experience in India and the UK. I completed my Royal College recognised ophthalmic training and fellowship at renowned eye hospitals in India, and subsequently undertook further training in the UK for over nine years, which included training in the Oxford Deanery and Ophthalmic Specialty Training (OST) in the northwest deanery primarily based at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. My advanced sub-specialty vitreoretinal training of two years included Manchester Royal Eye Hospital and a Vitreoretinal Fellowship at Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
I have presented in various national and international meetings and have scientific peer-reviewed publications to my credit. Also, as a trainer and supervisor, I am actively involved in training junior doctors and trainee surgeons in Ophthalmology.
