Virtual consultations:
I have been a consultant cardiologist at Blackpool Teaching Hospital for over 20 years. I grew up locally in Lancashire with schooling in Longridge and Preston. I am a University of Manchester graduate and completed by cardiology training at Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and Vancouver General Hospital, Canada. My special interests are treating patients with angina with angioplasty and stenting.
I have a special interest also in cardiac CT, being one of the handful of people in the UK to gain board certification nearly 10 years ago. In collaboration with the hospital I helped develop the cardiac facilities to include, echocardiography, exercise testing, holter monitoring and cardiac CT scanning. I finally have a special interest in Education and patient affairs. I contribute actively to the General Medical Council in my various roles and I act as the clinical adviser to the Parliamentary Health Service Ombudsman.
My clinical expertise includes managing patients with angina, heart failure, palpitations, blood pressure problems and managing cardiac risk factors. My service offers investigations such as echocardiography, transoesophageal echocardiography, exercise testing, holter recording for rhythm disturbances, 24 hour blood pressure monitors and event recorders. I have special expertise in angiography, angioplasty and stenting, pressure wire examination and coronary rotablation (drilling of hard calcified arteries). I also offer expertise in cardiac CT examination.
In my 20 years of consultant practise and in my extensive training, I have performed over 3,000 angioplasty procedures and over 8,000 angiograms in both my NHS and private practice. I have also helped to set up a joint cardiology and radiology cardiac CT service which is now one of the busiest in the North West.
In addition to the roles mentioned above, I have been a Clinical Director at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. I had been a member of the North West Ethics Committee for nearly 10 years until early 2017.
I am also an Honorary Clinical Tutor at the University of Liverpool. I am a committee member of the Joint Local Negotiating Committee at Blackpool Teaching Hospital as well as being a British Medical Association representative.
