Spire Gatwick Park Hospital patient completes 135 marathons since knee replacement surgery

26 March 2025

  • Kate Knight, aged 65, has continued to enjoy her lifelong hobby since her surgery in 2016

Spire Gatwick Park Hospital’s former patient, Kate, aged 65, initially booked a consultation with Mr George Tselentakis, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, for treatment of severe osteoarthritis of her left knee which was causing increased difficulty with mobility. These issues were restricting Kate’s basic daily activities as well as causing her to stay at home more, isolating her from her family.

Prior to surgery Kate had completed 50 marathons and was advised that she would not be able to complete another post-surgery. After careful consideration, X-rays and an MRI, Kate decided to have a total knee replacement at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital due to the hospital’s renowned reputation, ease of location and access, and the attentive staff.

Kate’s surgery was a success and she was excited to gain her quality of life back. Although initially uncomfortable post-surgery, she ensured that she began her post-operative physiotherapy exercises on the ward as soon as it was safe to do so. Once discharged, Kate fully committed to the exercises recommended by her outpatient physiotherapist at Spire Gatwick Park Hospital, building up her activity levels to strengthen her new knee.

Kate has run a total of 185 marathons with plans to complete a total of 200 marathons by the end of 2025 and 400 marathons by her 70th birthday. Incredibly, Kate completed another marathon at the end of January following shoulder surgery the previous month.

When competing, Kate is often recognised by other runners who explain to her that they have heard her story and that she inspired them to train and sign up. Kate’s advice to others considering surgery is that it is important to be patient, maintain a positive frame of mind and to remember that surgery is the start to a better life and being able to function again.

Kate commented “My surgery was a fantastic experience throughout; the staff were very thorough and this was when I felt that my road to recovery had started. My thanks go to Mr Tselentakis who supported me every step of the way, allowing me to regain my life back. I have had my new knee in situ for eight years and am pain free, meaning I can enjoy more marathons!”

Jayne Cassidy, Hospital Director, said: “Kate’s story is incredibly inspiring, demonstrating a great example of healthcare making a positive difference to people’s lives through outstanding personalised care. With determination, along with the right specialists and support Kate was able to quickly return to the things she loves, transforming her quality of life.“
