I have learnt many techniques during two fellowships that mean there is no irreparable cuff repair of the shoulder tendons. I have within my surgical repertoire an ability to graft the tendon, to insert a balloon or replace the shoulder if the disease is too advanced and offer the full spectrum of upper limb surgery. As an upper limb surgeon with a keen interest in sports medicine and education, I enjoy teaching physios, doctors, nurses and allied health professionals about my practice and techniques of examination. My surgical repertoire allows me to offer all arthroscopic (keyhole) and open surgery to shoulder, elbow and wrists/hands. I enjoy the challenges trauma has to offer too and make myself available at short notice when needed. I am keen to inject areas of inflammation and only list those patients for surgery that need it.
With around 2,000 keyhole operations and around 30 joint replacements in shoulders and elbows, I am confident with my ability and technique. Sheer quantity is not enough though and I endeavour to ensure quality follows my practice through a keen engagement to follow up the results of my surgery through patient reported outcome measures and detailed discussions with my physiotherapists post-operatively - the latter reassure me that my patients do very well under my care. I have a gentle and kind nature that gets the most out of the doctor-patient relationship through honesty.
I am a Consultant at Basildon and Thurrock University Hospital (BTUH) and since 2015 have been the Unit Training Director. I am also Team Leader for the Trauma Overhaul Project and an Appraiser. In 2016 I won the prestigious award for Doctor of the Year. Teaching is important to me and I am close to completing a Masters in Clinical Education through King's College London.
I am faculty on three FRCS revision courses and honorary senior lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. I am proud to be President of Rumbles Boxing Club in Kent. I have been involved with the London Irish Rugby Football Club for many years as one of the pitch-side doctors and have been looking after Amateur Boxers through England Boxing too. My Sports Medicine diploma has stood me in good stead to do so. I am participating in a Voice Recognition Trial at Basildon Hospital.
I am the Consultant Lead for Wellbeing & Staff Engagement at Basildon Hospital and also responsible for the educational needs of our newly developing Surgical Care Practitioners. I have lead sections of national recruitment of registrars into Orthopaedics for the past three years.
I enjoy visiting other surgeons at home and abroad to ensure my practice stays advanced, exemplified by sessions at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, Nice and Lyon in France, Madrid in Spain and Munich in Germany.
