CQC upgrades Spire Hartswood Hospital to 'Good'

27 April 2020

  • Report highlights the outstanding focus on patient psychological wellbeing, particularly in relation to cancer treatment
  • 88% of all Spire’s 39 UK hospitals are now rated as ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’

Brentwood-based Spire Hartswood Hospital has been upgraded to a ‘Good’ rating following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors carried out a comprehensive examination into services offered at the 35-bed facility in January and February of this year. They concluded that the facility should be upgraded to a ‘Good’ rating, having been classified as ‘Requires Improvement’ at the time of the last inspection in 2016.

This means that 88% of all Spire Healthcare hospitals and clinics are now rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding,’ or the national equivalent in Scotland and Wales.

The regulatory body examined whether services were safe, effective, caring, responsive to people's needs, and well-led. The hospital received ‘Good’ ratings in all areas.

The CQC found elements of outstanding practice, such as the attention staff paid to patients’ psychological wellbeing when delivering services. This included ensuring people were compassionately welcomed and treated sensitively from the moment they were referred. The care and attention for people receiving cancer treatment was singled out for particular praise.

Other areas of good practice highlighted were the way that infection risk is controlled, the advice given to patients on how to live healthier lives, and the involvement of patients in key decisions about their care.

Finally, staff were praised for their focus on continually improving the service.

Hospital facilities at Spire Hartswood include three operating theatres, an enhanced recovery unit, a three bay endoscopy unit and X-ray, outpatient and diagnostic facilities. The hospital provides surgery, medical care, services for children and young people, and outpatients and diagnostic imaging.

Jo Dean, Hospital Director at Spire Hartswood Hospital, said: “This upgrading to a ‘Good’ rating is a testament to the incredible amount of hard work that our teams have put into delivering the highest levels of care at Hartswood. We are extremely proud of this achievement, and our aim now is to build on our success so we achieve an ‘Outstanding’ rating when the inspectors next visit.”
